Having Elizabeth sleeping in his arms, lying partly on top of him, was something John had actually never thought would happen again. They had spent the day inside on their couch, reading. Both were wrapped in cosy blankets, the rain was drumming rhythmically against the windows of Atlantis; it was a quiet and dark day, but John was content. Elizabeth had been rescued from the replicators weeks ago, but her recovery was still in progress. It had been emotionally draining, months without her, and now that she was back, he was still worried sick about her. Things were getting better and better and he was hopeful that her nightmares would eventually fade and that she wouldn’t have to endure any more pains. Inside, he still blamed himself, even though Elizabeth showed him over and over again how much she trusted him. One day that feeling might be less present. As he tenderly stroked Elizabeth’s hair, he thought back on the day he'd gotten his first real kiss from Elizabeth.

Flashback.

John and Elizabeth were both trapped in the time dilation field. After two months without contact with Atlantis, they reluctantly started to settle down. With the help of Avrid, John spruced an old house up for him and Elizabeth to live in. Elizabeth immediately loved the new place. Nobody in the village questioned their relationship and all were happy to see them settling down. Especially Hedda, daughter of Teer, was a quite frequently visitor. She loved to stroll around with John in the fields and talking to Elizabeth, she was curious little girl.

On a cloudy day, John went for a walk alone. Elizabeth was still helping the women in the village and he wanted a little time alone. John jaunted through fields, grassland and forests, losing sense of time and drowning in his thoughts. Suddenly the weather changed, the slight dribble of the rain slowly turning into a heavy downpour. He was in the middle of a flowery meadow; no spot for hiding was near. So he started to run and almost knocked over a little something that was lying on the ground.

John stopped despite the rain and took a closer look. The little one looked a lot like a hedgehog baby; he was so tiny, but his ears were rather enormous. He didn’t seem to like the rain, so John moved over him, so that he was safe from it. After some curious blinks, the urchin opened his eyes fully and looked drolly up to his saviour. John looked around and tried to spot the mother of the little one, but no such luck. Swiftly, he pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket and scooped him up in his hands. He didn’t protest. John didn’t know if this was a good idea, but he was sure Elizabeth would love this cute little ball; and if he was honest, he couldn’t leave him here all on his own. John made his way back to the village. The rain was less intensive now, but he was soaked nevertheless. After half an hour of walk, just mere meters away from the village the rain stopped. He was greeted by Hedda, who was eagerly bouncing around John.

“Is this a surprise for Elizabeth?” Hedda asked curiously, pointing to John hands.

“Not sure. If she likes it; but maybe you can help me and tell me what sort of animal this is?” John got down on his knees and showed the little bundle. Hedda let out a girly squeak, before answering him.

“We call them Hemiechinus, I raised one once, and I named him after my uncle,” Hedda explained. “I got to go now; it looks like it will rain again any minute. She will love him, John.” Hedda said cheekily, winked once, and then ran off. John was baffled, but after the first raindrops hit him, he got up and quickly made his way to their house.

John came bustling through the door and Elizabeth immediately turned around. She was wearing a pale blue dress, a present from Teer.

“John, where have you been?” She couldn’t help but smile.

“I went for a walk, which turned into a rain dance. But I got you something,” he shyly grinned.

Elizabeth approached him slowly and opened the handkerchief. John never expected Elizabeth to make girly sounds. But as soon as she saw the hedgehog-like creature, she let out a girlish cry.

“Oh my god, John!” She picked the little guy up and examined him. John had to admit that they were a cute duo.

What now happened changed his life forever. Out of the blue, Elizabeth set her lips on his and gave him a chaste kiss.

Elizabeth obviously didn’t even bother to think about what she'd just done, because she had already turned her attention back to little boy in her hands. But John stood there stunned, his mouth just opening and closing again. He was unable to form any words. After a minute, Elizabeth looked up again and their eyes met. Elizabeth smiled shyly, but her smile was washed away by John's lips on hers. As short as the kiss was, they definitely had crossed a line with no turning back. Both busied themselves, unable to process what had just happened and John tried to change the topic.

“What do you want to call him?” John asked.

“I don’t know. With his ears, maybe we should name him after you….” Elizabeth smirked, which earned her a playful bump against her shoulder.

“Dumbo, how about Dumbo?” John asked.

“I love it. But now lets get you out of these clothes first,” Elizabeth beamed, looking at a completely drenched John.

Flashback end.

Elizabeth stirred and John thoughts drifted back to reality. She was waking up. John rubbed his hands slowly up and down her arms and gave her a kiss on top of her head. She stretched a bit before turning fully to him.

“Good evening, sleepy head. How did you sleep?” he said tenderly, giving her a peck on the nose.

“I just dreamed about Dumbo,” she said sleepily and gave him a kiss.

Yes, things were definitely getting better.

The end.
